Jaipur: Rule Indian trade market

Jaipur - Trade commodities to become wealthy merchant

Summary

Become a master trader by taking, trading and selling commodities

Players: 2 players

Gametime: 20-30 minutes

Gameplay

Set up the Game

  • Each player takes a set of cards.
  • Shuffle the deck of cards and place it in the center as a draw pile.
  • Deal five cards to each player, which form their starting hand.

Take Turns

  • On each turn, a player can either take cards or sell cards.
    • Taking cards: The player can take one or more cards from the center or from the camel pile. However, if taking from the center, they must replace the taken cards with cards from their hand or the camel pile.
    • Selling cards: The player can sell cards from their hand to earn tokens. Tokens are earned by forming sets of cards with the same commodity. The more cards in the set, the more valuable the tokens earned.

Manage Your Hand

  • It’s important to manage your hand and make strategic decisions. You can only have a maximum of seven cards in your hand at the end of each turn. If you have more than seven, you must sell cards to reduce your hand size.

Acquire Bonus Tokens

  • The first player to sell a set of three, four, or five cards of the same commodity will receive a bonus token. These tokens provide additional points at the end of the round.

End of the Round and Scoring

  • The round ends when three different commodity cards are exhausted from the deck.
  • Players count their total tokens and add any bonus tokens earned.
  • The player with the highest total points wins the round.
  • The game is typically played over three rounds, and the player with the highest total score at the end is the winner.

Review

Perhaps one of the best 2 player games, Jaipur is a three round game with easy to learn rules and highly competitive. The strategic depth, however, emerges as players delve deeper into the game, making it suitable for both casual and more experienced gamers. The gameplay revolves around making clever decisions regarding card collection and sales. Managing your hand effectively, knowing when to sell for immediate gains or hold onto cards for larger sets, is key to maximizing your points.
